Kobe Bryant, AKA Black Mamba, was a basketball legend and Black icon. He played 20 seasons for the Los Angeles Lakers, winning five NBA Championships, 2 MVPs, and the record of best scorer of all time.
To honor Kobe and his daughter Gianna Bryant, as well as all those that were lost on January 26, 2020, we created a number of special tributes. These hearts and alters utilized wood, paint, fresh flowers, and handmade candles, and became gathering spaces of love and remembrance for the community of Los Angeles. We built these offerings from our family to the community and the families impacted by loss. They were a reflection of the larger grief of this tragedy, and our salve to soothe the communal wound.
The one lesson that I feel like we’ve learned over and over again on this journey is the reality that our hurt is just as interconnected with one another as our joy, as our love, as our future, as our possibility. Our grief is interconnected. We ALL grieved Kobe. And we need to grieve our loved ones without shame. Without fear. We need to be able to cry as loudly as we cheer. We need to dance as freely as we remain still. We need to heal together.
Love u, always
